Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service recognises that business owners may be looking to increase security measures to protect their premises, following concern about recent events.
If you are the Responsible Person and you are considering making changes to your premises, we would like to remind you that fire safety measures should be maintained to ensure your premises remain compliant with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
If you are considering installing any enhanced security measures, these cannot obstruct emergency exits or access routes, or prevent or obstruct anyone from raising the alarm. This will ensure the safe and rapid evacuation of all occupants within the premises in the event of a fire.
Responsible Persons should review their fire risk assessment if any changes are made to the premises that will have an impact on any fire safety measures within it.
Steps to protect your premises from fire:
- Carry out or review your fire risk assessment, so that you can identify potential fire hazards.
- Make sure your staff know what to do in the event of a fire, by refreshing training and evacuation procedures.
- Make sure your fire detection systems are working properly.
- Make sure your fire escape routes are clear so people can evacuate quickly and safely.
- Remove any waste cardboard or other items that could be used as fuel for any fires being set; hard loose materials, such as construction items, should also be removed and stored in a secure location, especially if they are stored outside. Click here for more information.
- Store rubbish securely inside the boundaries of your property.
- Consider how you will respond if your fire alarm has activated. Click here for more information.
