Description: We received a call at 6.07pm this evening (9 June) about a recycling centre fire in Compton Bassett, near Calne. Crews are currently in attendance from Calne, Chippenham (x2), Devizes, Marlborough and Corsham along with a water carrier from Royal Wootton Bassett and support unit from Salisbury (approximately 30 firefighters). The incident involves approximately 100m x 100m of landfill.
Our crews are working hard to contain the fire and reduce the smoke plume - we will be on site overnight and likely into tomorrow.
Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed.
Update as of 7am (10 June)
Crews remained on scene overnight with the high volume pump being used to supply water to three monitors and three hose reel jets. The focus remains on stopping the fire spread and reducing the smoke plume to assist with day time operations.
Update as of 9am (10 June)
Two crews remain on scene, working jointly with on site staff to smother the fire. We expect to be on site for the foreseeable.
Update as of 8am (11 June)
Two crews have remained on scene throughout yesterday and overnight, continuing joint working to smother the fire. One hose reel jet has been in use to extinguish hotspots overnight. We hope to scale back further later on this afternoon.
Update as of 9am (12 June)
We have now left the scene in the control of the site management, and while there are some wisps of smoke still coming from the affected area, people should only now keep doors and windows closed if they are concerned.
