Gaining entry supports rapid access by South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST) to patients whose life is at risk within a property that paramedics are unable to get into.
We work in partnership with SWAST as part of a regional fire and rescue service approach. As part of this collaboration, we will attend emergency incidents when requested by the ambulance service to gain entry to an individual who needs medical treatment or assessment, to ensure the best possible treatment can be provided to all members of our community.
In certain circumstances, where it is believed the individual is at risk and requires immediate treatment or assessment, we will employ rapid access to the property.
On arrival, firefighters will liaise with the ambulance crew who are requesting entry, assess the scene, and identify the most appropriate way to gain entry to the property.
Gaining entry incidents
- We attended over 700 gaining entry incidents in 2023-24.
- If the occupant appears vulnerable, we are able to refer them for further safeguarding support.
- Gaining entry is an example of how emergency services are working in collaboration to improve the health, safety, and wellbeing of our communities.
